The Peregrine Winery has received international recognition
since it's completion in 2003. It is destined to become one of New
Zealand's best known buildings, yet remarkably, is a working
industrial building.
Lund's were awarded the project after a selected tender / RFP
process, and commenced construction of the Winery in November 2002,
after a delay created by Resource Consent requirements. The
operational wings of the complex were still completed and producing
wine by the original deadline of March 2003. The remainder of the
complex was completed in December 2003.
Many parts of the of the building were pushing the design limits
of the materials and systems used. As the design consultants were
based in either Wellington or Auckland, there was potential for
major problems, but excellent communication between ourselves,
Chris Kelly of Architecture Workshop, and the owner, Adam Peren,
meant that the problems remained incidentals, not fundamentals.
The design for the front of house / conference / barrel store
areas evolved as the building progressed, and to accommodate this
an exhaustive site query system was used, together with
comprehensive monthly site meetings to manage the changes and
decisions needed.
We are justifiably proud of both our achievement in completing
this building, and our part in the collaborative process, where
there was that rare occurrence, "a meeting of the minds" across the
construction and design process, and a shared vision for the
building.
Lund's were a delight to work with on this project. They showed
an ability to get things done, under very tight time frames, and
had an excellent result in achieving the on time completion of the
production facility despite a late start. In the latter stages of
the project where there were many changes and various design issues
to sort out, they demonstated a excellent grasp of what we as a
team were wanting to accomplish, and often provided innovative
solutions that enhanced the project. The standard of work,
particularly in the conference area with the recycled rimu, was a
credit to Lund's. In my opinion the relationship between the Owner,
Architect and Builder on this project was "as good as it gets".
